The Bachelor of Arts in English Language Learner Studies focuses on addressing the needs of those for whom English is not the first language. This degree provides you with the tools you need to perform in multiple teaching contexts, including multi-lingual classrooms and immersion settings. Many education professionals find that English Language Learner Studies make an excellent subject for their undergraduate work, in preparation for earning an advanced degree. This degree is not intended to teach English to speakers of other languages; it is designed for students who currently are teaching, or who wish to teach, English language learners. Entry RequirementsStudents seeking admission to an online undergraduate program must meet the following admission requirements prior to the start of the first course at Ashford University: Have a regular high-school diploma earned through college preparatory or regular high school courses or GED equivalency recognized by the Department of Education of the state in which it was earned, completed secondary school through home schooling as defined by state law, or earned an equivalent to a US high school diploma at an international high school according to approved Foreign Evaluation services. An earned IEP or Special Education Diploma or Certificate of Completion based upon IEP goals does not meet the regular high school diploma requirement for admission to Ashford University. If no high school degree was earned, applicants who have successfully completed at least a two-year program that is acceptable for full credit toward a bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited postsecondary institution, as defined by Ashford University transfer credit policies, may be admitted. Be 22 years of age or older, or be exempt from this requirement by meeting one of the following criteria: - Earned a minimum of 30 transferable credits* as defined by Ashford University transfer credit policies; - Earned an Associate’s degree or higher from a regionally or approved nationally accredited institution; or - Seeking readmission to Ashford University after withdrawal from a degree program; or - Current degree-seeking student at Ashford University requesting to change majors. Have the ability to study English indicated by one of the following: - Achieved a recognized high school diploma or equivalent in which the primary language of instruction was English - Received a GED that was taken in English - A minimum of 30 credits have been earned from regionally or approved nationally accredited colleges/universities in the United States or equivalent in which the primary language of instruction was English; or - Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination taken within the past two (2) years. They guide, mentor and educate adolescents at a crucial stage of their learning lives. Our program prepares you to teach in secondary schools, while also allowing you to build on the skills developed in your undergraduate degree. You will be part of a dynamic faculty that marries research rigour with experience. You will benefit from learning alongside our experienced secondary education academics and leading researchers. The Master of Teaching will build on strengths acquired in your undergraduate degree. You will study the foundations of education along with two specialist areas drawn from your previous tertiary studies. These specialisms will ultimately be what you are qualified to teach in secondary schools. Depth units are completed in the last semester of study - you have three streams to choose from: Advanced professional learning: Gives you the opportunity to select units in areas you're interested in to advance your professional knowledge.
